Just a quick tip if you are learning Dutch like me.
I’ve heard that it’s a good idea to expose yourself to the language every day – think about it, it probably has a similar effect to living in the country (minus the opportunities for practising your skills with the locals).
I’ve got many different ways of getting this exposure but one of my favourites is to listen to Radio 1.
For a beginner like me, the clarity of speech is good (except for occasions when listeners phone in!) and because this is a general news channel, you can still get a good idea for what people are talking about.
Plus if you’re learning the language on your own anyway, as I am with Michel Thomas Dutch, you can recognise new language, little bits here and there every day.
For example, today I heard the phrase “dat is een mooi combinatie” which may not mean much (that is a nice combination) but for me it was a small victory as I knew all the words before but had never seen them combined! This is a perfect example of context and is apparently one of the best ways to learn a language.
Well, if you have any other nice tips for learning Dutch, I’d love to hear from you so please leave a comment
