Registering For Work In The Netherlands

September 30th, 2008 · No Comments

If you want to work in The Netherlands then you need to register and get yourself a BSN (Burgerservicenummer). This is equivalent to a social security number in the USA or a National Insurance number in the UK.

Even if you legally have the right to live there e.g. EU citizen, you will still need a BSN (formerly called a SOFI number) in order to legally work in The Netherlands.

In fact, you need a BSN not just to start a job but also to open a bank account, use the health system and lots of other functions.

To get one, I understand that you register with the Gemeentelijke basisadministratie (GBA) – Municipal Personal Records Database – soon after arrival. As well as a BSN, I think they will also arrange to give you a verblijfsvergunning, or residence permit. Mind you, I’m looking at other links and it says that you should first register at the town hall and then the tax office, so I’m a little confused now! See the last link to see what I’m talking about.
